Its one of the most scary ordeals an apprentice can go through. To become a full, respected warrior, they must walk to the end of the dock and jump off.
It doesn't sound scary, but if you saw the dock, you would see why its frightening. Each board creaks and wobbles, and some planks are broken or gone.
